Nothing can be more unflattering than a prom date cloned from one of a Stephen King’s horror characters. Whether your date ignores you like the plague, vanishes into thin air, gets high or drunk with friends, or pressures you into uncomfortable situations, remember you’re neither obligated to your date nor responsible for their inappropriate behavior.

Unfortunately, some guys will hear a rumor that a certain girl is “easy”, and then she quickly becomes the object of his interest. He will sugarcoat all the old lines and clichés to swoon her into becoming his prom date, yet disguising his ill-willed intentions. However, on prom night he realizes the rumors about his date are just that, rumors. She isn’t interested in making-out, much less anything more. He becomes irritate and angry, leaving his prom date to fend for herself the rest of the night.

If your date has been drinking or using drugs, be aware, those are other major disaster waiting to happen. Not only is underage drinking illegal, possession of narcotics is a big problem in which you don’t want to involve yourself. Remember you should never hesitate to call your parents or friends to come pick you up from the prom; a quick phone call certainly outweighs the alternatives.

The inviter, or the person doing the inviting, should make sure his/her date has a wonderful time at the prom and ensures his/her date arrives home safely before the predefined curfew. If there’s a problem or you’re going to arrive late, call your parents so they won’t worry. It’s better to arrive late than not at all.

The majority of prom dates go smoothly and everyone has a great time. Communicating with your prom date beforehand prevents many uncomfortable situations; define your morals and set boundaries that are not to be crossed. No matter how cute/handsome your date is, stick to your morals!
